I’m reminded of the song, “My Favorite Things” from the musical, “Sound of Music” sung by Julia Andrews.
“When the dog bites, when the bee stings,
when I’m feeling sad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
and then I don't feel so bad.
When we face a fear, hurt, or just life in general, where is our focus? Do we busy ourselves to help distract us? Do we rely on horoscopes to determine what we do for the day? Where and with whom we spend our time, reflects our priorities and values. Whether it is family, friends, shopping, sports (watching, too), crafting, reading, or ________ (your desires) all become a part of who you are. It is good to have something that helps us unwind at the end of the day, or gives us a chance to connect with others. These “things” give us a temporary fulfillment. It’s all good, unless we allow them to crowd out the most important in our life.
I’m talking about our heavenly perspective, our hope, our peace, our joy. It’s important to keep grounded in the eternal and not allow ourselves to be swayed by the fleeting temporary satisfactions of this world.
Paul said it best,
Philippians 3: 13-15
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do,
forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded:
and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.
When we loose our perspective, we focus on the immediate and the temporal. When the difficult times come your way, what will you rest in? Will you be thinking of your ‘favorite things’, busying yourself to help crowd out the hurt and calamity coming your way, OR, do you meditate on the Word of God? Have you taken your care to Jesus and found rest at His feet? As Paul did, set your eyes on the ‘prize’. It is eternal.
What is your favorite thing? Where lies your rest? Peace? Hope?
My hope is in you, oh Lord, you are my strength and joy!
Psalm 33:20-22 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
20 Our soul waits for the Lord;
He is our help and our shield.
21 For our heart rejoices in Him,
Because we trust in His holy name.
22 Let Your lovingkindness, O Lord, be upon us,
According as we have hoped in You.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, I pray for those who are searching for peace, comfort, and hope find it in you and you alone. May they come to you for help and seek your face. Help them to find a heavenly perspective and an everlasting hope in You, oh Lord. Amen.
Have a blessed day!
